About...me

Thanks for dropping by.

I am the illustrator/artist/designer behind Two Black Dogs, my little artistic outlet that gives me the chance to break out of the 9-5 normality of life.... and create.

Sometimes it's nice to know who is behind the front page of a website. So....Who am I, where am I, what do I enjoy?Hi, I'm Kerri.I live in beautiful Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, have 1 wonderful husband, 2 gorgeous daughters, 2 black labradors, 1 cheeky galah, 1 cockatiel, 2 lorikeets, and 2 chickens.

I enjoy the outdoors, camping, working on my vintage car, hanging with the kids, and training my dogs.….blah blah blah blah

I have a background in Graphic Design and Illustration, and dabble with marketing, social media and websites.

If I've missed anything, or you'd like chat, drop me a line at hello@twoblackdogs.com.au

Collaborations are always exciting.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy visiting my creative space.

Two Black Dogs Totes

In early 2020 I launched Two Black Dogs Totes. I had restored my mothers vintage dresser, and finally 'Priscilla' my sewing machine (aptly named after my grandmother who sewed my mums wedding dress) found a permanent home. At the same time I also discovered origami totes on Pinterest and was keen to make one, but failed miserably at finding any 'different' fabric to use. There was a couple of websites that sold meterage that was cute, but the cost of these boutique designs was on par with creating and having my own printed.

Soooo, that's what I did.

Let's talk totes.
Each tote is hand sewn (by me) in my little studio. They are fully lined with the TBD logo stamped on the lining, and lovingly wrapped in my own designs on the outside. There is two large pockets on the inside (super cool for storing the items you need to get to fast) and the bag is nice and large, just the way we like it.

Just in case you missed the small print peeps..... a woman's bag is suppose to be a tardis!

The shoulder straps are 40mm wide kangaroo leather, tanned by Packers Leather, north of Brisbane.

Ta-Da!

PS....At the same time Surface Patterns by Two Black Dogs was born. I figured that if I was struggling to find fabric that was a bit different, maybe others were too.

You can visit the link above to purchase meterage of my favorite designs or furnishings from my shop on Society6.

Illustration

I have always enjoyed illustrating, and I never have sketchbook far from hand.

A sketchbook is something that I can pick up at any stage of the day (when time allows). Waiting for the kids to come out of school, those insomnia moments at 2am, waiting at the doctors, stuck in traffic.

Hence where my postcard and colouring book creations have come from. I have a bucket load of doodles, and will be brining more hand illustrated goodness to my online shop soon.

Design

After leaving high school I studied Graphic Design (or Commercial Art as it was know back then, that is showing my age), and most work was illustrated or mocked up by hand. These skills transferred through to the Adobe platform in my various work places.

I am always open to freelance work.

Bunny Snores and Bouncing Paws

Bunny Snores and Bouncing Paws is a book written by my good friend and partner in crime, Jo Reid-Speirs, and illustrated by myself :

Jo has a long and very extensive background within the education industry, Her knowledge and understanding of how children learn is the key to her writing.

We formed Scribbles and Rhymes 2019, and have more books planned for the future.

Watch this space.

In the meantime, please read below Jo's description of this amazing children's book.

ABOUT this learning tool

Building number sense in a child’s early years is the foundation for success in mathematics in their later years. The delightful finger play story of ‘Bunny Snores and Bouncing Paws’ presents verbal, written and symbolic representations of number in a fun and engaging way. The use of finger actions helps to develop a child’s number sense as they build on their perception and representation of numbers using fingers throughout the story.

‘Bunny Snores and Bouncing Paws’ can be sung to familiar tunes or chanted. This creates a powerful memory aid for children as they recall and represent essential number facts to ten.

As ‘Bunny Snores and Bouncing Paws’ is read, children are encouraged to use their fingers as they progress through the story. Once all the bunnies are ready to run and bounce outdoors, children should use their fingers to jump and bounce! The countdown represented in ‘Bouncing Paws and Bunny Snores’, further reinforces a child’s perception and representation of numbers using fingers.

The additional images in the book can promote discussion relating to a range of mathematical concepts. The time on the wall clock changes in five minute intervals prompting discussion relating to elapsed time. ‘The vivid designs on the bedspreads promotes discussion relating to patterns, shape, symmetry, line, arrays and fractions.

Whilst this book is written for children, it is a great resource for teachers and parents as they engage with children in the early years to build number sense. This multisensory book provides a feast of visual stimuli as well as auditory, language, rhythmic and movement experiences for children.
